Hunter Elementary School first open in 1957, and was named after William W. Hunter; A well-known Fairbanks resident at the time. New construction took place at Hunter in 1958 with the addition of a gym, the addition of a new wing in 1959 and the addition of the library in 1974. Hunter Elementary was completely renovated between 1996-1999 and 2000-2004 in a two-phase process. Hunter Elementary was the recipient of a Goals 2000 Grant and a 2010 Technology Grant. Hunter’s After School Program received some notoriety when the iMovie “After School is Really Cool” was showcased to government officials in 2009. Hunter supports a diverse population of students that includes many multiethnic groups comprised of African- American, Alaska Natives, American Indian, Asian, Caucasian and Hispanic
